Joblessness increased from 5.8 percent in April, the ministry said.

In March, unemployment stood at 5.4 percent, according to the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS).

"The global coronavirus pandemic has had an impact on almost all areas of social and economic life, including on unemployment,” Labour Minister Marlena Maląg said on Friday.

“Despite this, the situation in Poland is relatively stable today. We are not seeing a rapid rise in this respect,” she added.

The Polish government in March came up with a multi-billion relief and stimulus package to mitigate the economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 25,177 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 disease in Poland, with 1,127 deaths from the coronavirus so far, officials said on Friday morning.
