The new 1.5-kilometre bridge will be built some 70 km southeast of the capital Warsaw, between the villages of Antoniówka Świerżowska and Świerże Górne, by 2024, Duda announced at a campaign event on Sunday.

He added that the project would benefit local residents and improve their quality of life after a wait of more than 80 years.

In all, 20 new bridges will be constructed around the country under the Polish government's massive PLN 2.3 billion (EUR 500 million, USD 600 million) "Bridges for Regions" programme, Duda told a news conference on Sunday.

Duda, who is seeking reelection for a second five-year term, said at the end of last month that large infrastructure and industrial projects were a driver of economic growth in the time of the coronavirus crisis.

The Polish president and prime minister in late May urged stepped-up investment in Europe to stimulate economies and help them recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
