Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Czech Republic boasted the lowest unemployment in the European Union in June, at 2.4 percent, while Germany and Malta trailed Poland in a joint third place, each with 4.2 percent, according to the Eurostat agency.
Meanwhile, Spain had the highest jobless rate in the EU, at 15.6 percent, while Greek unemployment was the second-highest at 15.5 percent, the agency said.
It reported that the EU average for June was 7.1 percent, up from 7 percent in May and 6.6 percent in June 2019.
Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), which uses a different methodology, reported this month that the Polish jobless rate stood at 6.1 percent in June, up from 6 percent in May.
Poland’s Labour Minister Marlena Maląg said last month that some 5 million jobs had been saved throughout the country thanks to measures including a massive relief and stimulus package ushered in by the government to shield the economy from the coronavirus.
