Several heads of state from Central and Eastern European countries, including Poland’s Andrzej Duda, are expected to talk about the future of their region during the Three Seas Virtual Summit in Tallinn on Monday.
Also expected to take part are US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager as well as a host of business leaders.
The event focuses on new investment and the smart connectivity concept to ensure that the Three Seas region continues to drive economic growth in Europe, according to organisers.
Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid has said that the summit can give new impetus to the development of transport and energy sector infrastructure in the Three Seas region.
“West-Europe is connected with a tight infrastructure network, but the years spent behind the Iron Curtain have left their mark on the infrastructure connections of our area,” Kaljulaid said, as quoted on the 3seas.eu website.
She added: “On the other hand, this region has had excellent economic growth and creating better infrastructure connections between the Three Seas countries has great economic potential.”
Debates will focus on topics including the funding of energy, transport and digital infrastructure, and digitization in the energy and transport sectors.
US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette and a range of other political and business figures are due to speak at the event.
The Polish-led Three Seas Initiative aims to boost infrastructure, energy and business ties among 12 countries between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic Seas.
The initiative brings together Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The initiative’s key partners are Germany, the European Union and the United States.
