Each of the small modular reactors (SMR) will have a capacity of 77 megawatts (MWe), Polish state news agency PAP reported.

KGHM’s CEO Marcin Chludziński said his company was the country’s second-largest consumer of electricity and had to "look for stable and economically secure sources of power” for its production facilities amid fluctuating prices.

“This is why we decided to work with NuScale,” he said.

NuScale Power CEO John Hopkins hailed the deal as an important project for both sides and the start of a long-term relationship, according to the Polish news agency.

He also said the deal marked a significant step for the international expansion of SMR technology, PAP reported.

Poland's KGHM is one of the world's biggest copper and silver producers.
