The new Polish mega-airport near Warsaw would be linked by rail with the German city of Frankfurt an der Oder, almost halving the time it takes to travel between Berlin and the Polish capital, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has reported, according to Poland's tvp.info website.

The website quoted the German paper as saying that it cannot be ruled out that in the future, many Germans will be tempted to use the new Polish airport for international travel.

If all goes to plan, the rail connection between the German capital and the planned Polish airport will be quicker than one between Berlin and Frankfurt am Main, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, according to tvp.info.

Moreover, the new Polish mega-airport is expected to offer multiple intercontinental air links, tvp.info said.

It cited Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as saying that Poland’s air travel market was one of the fastest growing in the world.

The country’s number of air passengers per year has grown from over 8.8 million in 2004, when Poland entered the European Union, to over 50 million 15 years later, the German newspaper reported, according to tvp.info.

The new Polish air hub will be located in the municipality of Baranów, 40 km west of Warsaw, and will integrate air, rail and road transport, according to officials.

The mega-airport, with an initial capacity of 45 million passengers a year, is expected to be built by 2027.
