Polish jobless rate second-lowest in EU, at 2.9% in December: Eurostat

Unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.9 percent in December, the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation European Union, the bloc’s statistics agency has reported.

The Czech Republic boasted the lowest jobless rate in the bloc in December, at 2.1 percent, while Germany trailed Poland in third place, with 3.2 percent, according to the Eurostat agency.

Meanwhile, Spain had the highest seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in the EU, at 13 percent, while Greek unemployment was the second-highest at 12.7 percent, the agency's data showed.

Eurostat reported that the EU average for December was 6.4 percent, down from 6.5 percent in November.

Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), which uses a different methodology, reported at the end of last month that the Polish jobless rate held steady at 5.4 percent in December, unchanged from November.
