Polish jobless rate second-lowest in EU, at 2.8% in January: Eurostat

Unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.8 percent in January, the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation European Union, the bloc’s statistics agency has reported.

The Czech Republic boasted the lowest jobless rate in the bloc in January, at 2.2 percent, while Germany and Malta trailed Poland in joint third place, each with 3.1 percent, according to the Eurostat agency.

Meanwhile, Greece had the highest seasonally-adjusted jobless rate in the EU, at 13.3 percent, while Spanish unemployment was the second-highest at 12.7 percent, the agency's data showed.

Eurostat reported that the EU average for January was 6.2 percent, down from 6.3 percent in December.

Poland’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), which uses a different methodology, reported last month that the Polish jobless rate inched up to 5.5 percent in January, from 5.4 percent in December.
