In a statement, the company said the figure is a 28 percent increase over May of 2019, the last year before the coronavirus crisis broke out.
Also, PKP Intercity said it carried 20.1 million people in the first five months of this year, reaching another record.
The figure marks the best January-to-May result since 2009 and is 8 percent more compared to the same period in 2019.
According to the statement, the recent increase in the number of passengers is largely due to introducing a special 'Promo' offer for '"economy class" trains, which resulted in serving over a million passengers every week.
Also, the President of the company's management board, Marek Charciek, said: "We have been intensively preparing for the holiday season, during which we expect many people to consider the train as an attractive alternative to car travel" due to soaring petrol prices.
PKP Intercity offers services connecting all major Polish cities, and runs Poland’s fleet of high-speed Pendolino trains.
