The reading is lower than the government’s earlier estimate of 4.9 percent.

It is also a slight drop on July and June, when the jobless rate stood at 4.9 percent.

Unemployment in August at 4.8 percent

There were around 806,900 people without jobs across the nation at the end of August, compared with 810,200 a month earlier, according to the state-run Statistics Poland (GUS) office.

Poland’s Family and Social Policy Minister Marlena Maląg told the PAP news agency that the “historically low” jobless rate in August stemmed not only from a summer uptick in job offers, but “above all from government policies” to support employers and protect jobs. 

Meanwhile, the European Union’s Eurostat statistics agency, which uses a different methodology, estimated at the start of September that unemployment in Poland was a modest 2.6 percent in July, the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation European Union.
