Poland's Anna Moskwa and America's Jennifer Granholm held talks during a summit of the US-led Partnership for Transatlantic Energy and Climate Cooperation (P-TECC) in Zagreb, Croatia, on Wednesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
On the sidelines of the get-together, Moskwa and Polish Deputy Climate and Environment Minister Adam Guibourgé-Czetwertyński met with Granholm to discuss “the project that strengthens Polish-American cooperation and our energy security--the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland,” the Polish climate and environment ministry said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, Moskwa tweeted: “Another important meeting on the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland. During the P-TECC 2023 summit I talked to US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.”
Moskwa added: “The strategic investment is being implemented according to schedule, and thanks to this project we are strengthening Poland’s energy security.”
Rebuilding Ukraine’s critical infrastructure
One of the main topics of the P-TECC 2023 ministerial summit was the reconstruction of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure damaged by Russia's invasion, officials said.
Poland’s Moskwa urged the gathering: “We must secure for Ukraine the biggest possible compensation from Russia for everything that’s been destroyed.”
She added: “It’s a big task for us today: to calculate the losses and prepare documents to go through this process as quickly as possible.”
The P-TECC initiative focuses on decarbonisation in the economies of Central and Eastern Europe, strengthening energy security in the region, fostering business ties with American companies and boosting cooperation, the PAP news agency reported.
Poland to build nuclear power plants
In November, Poland's government greenlighted plans to develop nuclear energy in the country. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced at the time that Poland's "first nuclear facility will be built using US technology in cooperation with the American company Westinghouse Nuclear.”
He revealed that Poland’s first nuclear power plant would be built "in the north of the country" and cost around USD 20 billion, the PAP news agency reported.
Moskwa told the media in November that the government had agreed to build three reactors in northern Poland, with “construction set to start in 2026 and the first reactor to be ready in 2033,” according to news reports at the time.
During a meeting with Morawiecki in Warsaw last week, US President Joe Biden “welcomed the Polish government’s decision to select a U.S-based company, Westinghouse, to provide the technology for its first three nuclear reactors, cementing a long-term strategic energy partnership between Poland and the United States,” the White House said in a statement.
