Europe cannot substitute some of the crucial American military supplies to Ukraine, said Jakub Janda, director of the Prague-based European Values Center for Security Policy think tank.
He described Washington's move as both "terrifying" and strategically significant, warning that it places Ukraine in an extremely difficult position given the magnitude of US assistance so far.
"More importantly, many of the weapon systems provided by the United States are irreplaceable, as European governments either lack them or cannot supply them in sufficient quantities," Janda told public broadcaster Polish Radio.
While Europe could offer significantly more financial support, Janda said "the key weapon systems Ukraine needs are American or stored in American warehouses."
He argued that Europe's main challenge is to unfreeze US military support, potentially through broad financing programmes in which EU funds would be used to procure American arms for Ukraine.
"This is exactly what should be done on a large scale," Janda told Polish Radio's Karol Darmoros.
The United States remains Ukraine's largest military supporter, Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.
By the end of last year, Washington had provided nearly USD 70 billion in military aid to Kyiv, according to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German think tank that closely tracks wartime aid to Ukraine.
