Fossils of pliosaurus, the Jurassic era , giant, carnivorous marine reptiles, have been discovered by scientists from the Polish Academy of Sciences in the village of Krzyżanowice near the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, central Poland.
“The reptiles were much larger than the dinosaurs of the same era”, said dr Daniel Tyborowski, from the Polish Academy of Sciences, “and the largest predators to inhabit the region of present day Poland, reaching up to 12 meters in length”.
The team led by Tyborowski also found fossils of prehistoric crocodiles, turtles and ammonites. The fossils discovered in Krzyżanowice date back to some 150 million years. Remains of the pliosaurus have also been found in England, France ,Greenland and Russia.
