The patriotic monument is expected to be unveiled on August 15 next year to mark the 100th anniversary of the country's historic victory over Red Army forces in the 1920 Battle of Warsaw, Culture and National Heritage Minister Piotr Gliński told reporters on Thursday.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Warsaw City Hall officials, Gliński said that an open competition would be launched on Friday to select a design for the monument, which some have suggested should take the form of an arch of triumph.

The 1920 Battle of Warsaw, often described as the “Miracle of the Vistula,” is believed to have saved Poland’s newly regained independence after the end of World War I and prevented the Bolshevik revolution from spreading into western Europe.

The landmark battle has been listed among the most important battles that have decided the fate of the world.
