Scientists win ‘Polish Nobel Prizes’

Three leading scientists have won awards hailed as the “Polish Nobel Prizes” from a foundation in Warsaw.
The annual Foundation for Polish Science Awards, now in their 31st year, are handed out in four areas: chemical and material sciences; mathematical, physical and engineering sciences; humanities and social sciences; and life and earth sciences.

The awards, presented by the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), went to Marcin Nowotny, Bartosz Grzybowski and Adam Łajtar in recognition of their outstanding achievements and scientific discoveries.

Each of the winners received a statuette and prize money of PLN 200,000 (EUR 42,700, USD 44,900) when the awards were officially presented at a ceremony in Warsaw on Wednesday, state news agency PAP reported.

The award panel decided the three professors were leading lights of the country’s research and academic communities, and mentors for many colleagues and students.

The annual Foundation for Polish Science Awards, now in their 31st year, are handed out in four areas: chemical and material sciences; mathematical, physical and engineering sciences; humanities and social sciences; and life and earth sciences.

This year, the foundation decided not to give an award in the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences category, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
