This marks a decline of 131,000 compared to the previous year, according to the Statistics Poland office.

The nation saw its lowest number of births in the postwar period last year, the head of Statistics Poland, Dominik Rozkrut, said.

He added that Poland's "demographic situation over the last decade has been concerning."

While the population decline in 2023 was less than in the two previous years, it "remained significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels," according to Rozkrut.

Preliminary estimates by Statistics Poland indicate that 272,000 children were born in Poland last year, representing a decrease of 33,000 from the previous year.

This decline marks the lowest number of births since World War II, Rozkrut said.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths decreased to 409,000, falling by 39,000 compared with 2022, Statistics Poland reported.
