The proposed legislation includes measures such as banning the use of chains to restrain dogs and limiting the practice of confining them in small enclosures.

This initiative has gained the support of 500,000 Polish citizens.

Ban on dog chains and microchip requirement

Key provisions in the proposal include harsher penalties for animal abuse, a ban on the use of firecrackers, and mandatory microchipping of dogs.

The reform has gained backing from more liberal parties like Lewica, Razem, and Polska 2050, but has faced criticism from the national-populist PiS and far-right Konfederacja, which called for its rejection.

The bill has passed its first reading in the Sejm, and if the lawmakers don't reject it, the legislation will move forward for further discussion in committee.
