The man was detained and taken to the station on Tuesday evening following a police intervention at an apartment on Wawrzyńca Street in Kraków. A neighbor had reported a domestic disturbance.
"After the fire brigade forced entry into the apartment, we found a wounded 24-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man who had attempted suicide. The woman was transported to the hospital, where she unfortunately died," according to Małopolska Police spokesperson Anna Zbroja, as reported by the Polish Press Agency.
The 23-year-old, suspected of murdering the woman, was brought to the police station on Szeroka Street for further procedures.
"Today, before six o'clock during these procedures, the detainee snatched a firearm from a police officer and, according to preliminary findings, committed suicide," Zbroja stated.
Investigations are ongoing at the scene. The circumstances are being examined by the control department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Kraków.
According to unofficial information obtained by Polish Radio, the man was a foreign national from Canada.
The District Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the incident.
