Half of Poles believe Ukraine should not join NATO or the European Union until the issue of exhuming victims of the World War II-era Volhynia Massacre—where ethnic Poles were killed by Ukrainian nationalists—is resolved, according to a new survey.

The poll, carried out by researcher IBRiS for the daily Rzeczpospolita, found that 27.7 percent of respondents "definitely oppose" Ukraine’s accession without first completing exhumation efforts.

Meanwhile, 22.5 percent "rather oppose" such membership.

Opposition to Ukraine’s entry under these conditions was strongest among right-wing voters, particularly viewers of the conservative TV Republika station, which is highly critical of the government, Rzeczpospolita reported.

Meanwhile, 20.4 percent of respondents "rather support" Ukraine's NATO and EU membership regardless of the exhumation process, and 14.4 percent "definitely support" it.

An additional 15 percent of those polled said they were unsure.
