Robert Bąkiewicz, leader of the Polish far-right group Stowarzyszenie Roty Marszu Niepodległości, is demanding an apology from Germany’s Bild after the newspaper referred to participants in Saturday’s border protest as “neo-Nazis.”

The demonstration took place at the Zgorzelec-Görlitz crossing, where masked protesters allegedly displayed racist slogans and symbols, including Celtic crosses, while decrying what they call illegal migrant pushbacks by German authorities.

Bąkiewicz, the main organizer, insists the rally was peaceful and that any extremist elements were “provocateurs.” He has called Bild’s characterization “slanderous and historically offensive,” and formally requested a retraction.

The German outlet has not responded to the demand.

Polish police reported no serious incidents at the event, which was allegedly meant to criticize both German and Polish governments’ handling of migrants at the shared border.
