Polish astronaut enjoys pierogi in space and reflects on Earth’s borderless view

Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski discussed enjoying the classic Polish specialty, pierogi, aboard the ISS yesterday, and today he described seeing Earth as one fragile planet without borders during a press conference in Warsaw.

“Pierogi are a very Polish dish. I used to make them for my friends when I lived in Switzerland, France, and Germany to share our culture. On the ISS, we eat pierogi filled with cabbage and mushrooms, just like the ones traditionally served at Christmas,” said Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski during a Sunday call with Axiom Space and members of the Ax-4 mission.

Polish vegetarian pierogi take on space

Sonya Gavankar McKay from Axiom Space connected with the Polish astronaut and mission commander Peggy Whitson, who were aboard the Columbus laboratory module.

The crew appeared with the floating pierogi in the background - part of the food supplies Uznański brought with him.

“These are vegetarian pierogi, the kind we eat at Christmas,” Uznański-Wiśniewski noted.

Freeze-dried pierogi - the same kind that the first Polish astronaut brought to the ISS - are now available for purchase in a major grocery chain in Poland.

The following day, on Monday, 7 July, the Polish space traveler currently aboard the International Space Station answered questions from Polish journalists during a press conference at Warsaw’s Copernicus Science Centre.

No borders seen from orbit, only a fragile Earth, says Polish astronaut

Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski asked whether he had seen Poland from orbit, explained that so far he had not managed to take clear photographs of Polish cities.

When the ISS passed over the country, the station was still illuminated by sunlight while Poland was already in Earth’s shadow, making it difficult to capture good images.

Speaking about observing Earth from the Cupola module, he noted that “you can’t see borders or countries - you see one beautiful planet with a very delicate, thin atmosphere.”

Uznański-Wiśniewski expressed hope that humanity would use its resources responsibly.
