Most Poles want women included in military training: survey

Nearly three-quarters of Poles believe women should also be included in any potential compulsory military service or training scheme, although most favour a different form of involvement from that expected of men, a new survey has found.

The poll, conducted by United Surveys by IBRiS for the Wirtualna Polska news website and published on Sunday, found that 72.5% of respondents supported extending military service or training to women.

More than half of all those surveyed — 50.7% — said women should undergo training tailored to specific roles, such as medical support or logistics.

A further 21.8% said women should be called up on exactly the same terms as men.

Nearly one in four respondents, or 24.8%, opposed extending any potential obligation to women, arguing that it should apply exclusively to men. Just 2.7% were undecided.

Support for involving women in national defence structures outweighed opposition across the political spectrum, although voters differed in their views on how such participation should be organised.

The findings come amid renewed debate in Poland over military preparedness and the possibility of reintroducing compulsory military training or conscription as the country seeks to strengthen its armed forces in response to the threat posed by Russia.

A separate survey conducted by Opinia24 for Polish broadcaster RMF24 earlier this week found that 46% of Poles supported restoring compulsory military service. Of those, 22% favoured conscription for both men and women, while 24% said it should apply only to men.

However, he same poll found that a majority of young respondents were opposed to bringing back compulsory military service, with 53% of those aged 18 to 24 rejecting the idea.

Poland suspended compulsory military service under legislation passed in 2009. However, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has intensified discussions about the country’s defence capabilities, the size of its armed forces and the role civilians could play in a national emergency.
