According to a report by the Rzeczpospolita newspaper, Ukrainians and Belarusians are especially keen to study in Poland.
At present, the number of foreign students in the country totals 82,500, with a record 4,000 new arrivals over the past year, Rzeczpospolita said in its report.
Preliminary data for the new academic year suggest the record will be broken, the daily reported.
At the Jagiellonian University in the southern city of Kraków, foreign-based applications rose by around 10 percent compared to the previous 12 months, a spokesman was cited as saying.
The University of Zielona Góra in western Poland reported an even higher increase, at more than 20 percent, its spokeswoman told Rzeczpospolita.
The newspaper said the upturn was a nationwide trend.
"In spite of the pandemic, we have not witnessed any decline in the number of foreign learners at Polish higher education institutions," said Anna Ostrowska, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education and Science.
Despite lengthy residence procedures and the coronavirus pandemic, foreign students are attracted by low fees and the fact that Poland is a member of the European Union, the paper reported.
Moreover, Polish university degrees are recognised by universities abroad, an education expert told Rzeczpospolita, adding that "the situation in the East" meant Ukrainians and Belarusians came to Poland in particularly high numbers.
Ukrainian and Belarusian most often choose to become doctors or study management, computer science and international relations, the newspaper reported.
