The announcement was made by Michał Dworczyk, a top aide to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

At a joint media briefing following their talks in Kyiv, Dworczyk said: “I’m very pleased that we were able to discuss the policies that will be introduced following a decision by Prime Minister Morawiecki.”

Support for Ukraine’s women soldiers, orphans

He added that Poland would launch "a programme of support for Ukrainian women soldiers released from Russian captivity, and offer permanent assistance to orphans, the children who lost their fathers at the hands of the Russians."

Dworczyk told reporters that both programmes would be launched in Ukraine within six weeks, while financial and policy details would be announced soon.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Vereshchuk said the programme for female troops would involve psychological support as well as financial assistance, “including help with housing, because many people lost their homes.”

She stressed that support would be tailored to individual needs, adding that Ukraine had so far managed to secure the release of 360 people from Russian captivity.

Poland and Ukrainians ‘as close as never before’

Dworczyk said Poles and Ukrainians “have become as close as never before” amid the war, and thanked Ukrainians “for fighting not just for a free, independent Ukraine, but also for a free Poland and a free Europe.”

Vereshchuk thanked Poland and its people for the support extended to her country, including "thousands of tons of humanitarian aid" and "billions of zlotys allocated from the Polish budget."

She said: “Poland is showing the entire world what solidarity and compassion are about. We thank you for your sincere hospitality. More than 2.5 million Ukrainian people are staying in your homes.”

Monday was day 82 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Poland on Monday reported it had welcomed 3.4 million refugees fleeing Russia's war on Ukraine.
