Former Georgian president thanks Poland for support

Jailed former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili thanked Poland for support after European Union member states issued a formal diplomatic warning to Tbilisi over the deteriorating health of the former head of state.

Polish diplomat Paweł Herczyński, who is the EU's ambassador to Georgia, on Monday said he had submitted a statement of protest to Georgian authorities calling for the release of Saakashvili so that he can receive medical treatment in Poland.

In an interview with public broadcaster Polish Radio, Saakashvili’s spokesman, Giorgi Khaladze, on Monday thanked Poland and other EU countries for their support of the former president, whose condition he said was alarming.
