Stanek’s passing was announced by Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski on Tuesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Trzaskowski wrote on the X social media platform, formerly known as Twitter: “Teresa Stanek, nom de guerre Mitsuko, has passed away at the age of 93. An enormous loss. Warsaw will always remember you.”

Born in 1929 in the south-central Polish city of Kielce, following Germany’s 1939 invasion of her country, Stanek became involved in local cultural life, helping organise clandestine concerts, poetry evenings and meetings with authors, the PAP news agency reported.

She then joined the underground Home Army, working as a messenger, liaison and orderly, as well as taking part in sabotage operations against the Germans and distributing anti-Nazi literature, according to historians.

After the war, Stanek studied archaeology and history before starting to work for various publishing houses and serving as a councillor in Warsaw between 1990 and 2002, the PAP news agency reported.

In October 2021, she was appointed chairwoman of the board of the World Association of Home Army soldiers, according to officials.

Stanek, who had the rank of lieutenant, received various state decorations and medals, including the Knight’s Cross of the Polonia Restituta Order, the PAP news agency reported.
