Spearheaded by the Polish Smog Alert grassroots movement, the initiative seeks to raise air quality awareness across the country.

According to World Health Organisation data, small and medium-sized towns are often the main culprits for high pollution levels in Poland.

Smog here largely comes from residents burning low-quality coal and wood, the main heating fuels for millions of Polish households.

“There are cities like Rybnik or Kraków that, under citizen pressure, have actively started fighting smog,” said Mateusz Janicki of the Polish Smog Alert.

“However, challenges persist at the provincial level," he added. "As a resident of Kraków within the Małopolska region, I  can see the province us such has been rather sluggish in combating smog."
