The June 4 1989 landmark vote heralded the collapse of communism in the country after decades of totalitarian rule.

Warsaw authorities decided to extend celebrations into the weekend to allow residents to participate in a series of events.

A Siren Parade is to be held at 1pm to honour the city’s symbol.

Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski told Polish Radio that this year there will be as many as 20 platforms with images of sirens.”

The capital’s Castle Square will host the weekends final concert, during which artists from Studio Accantus will perform songs from Disney movies together with the parade participants.

The city has also launched a special fan zone in front of the Palace of Culture and Science Warsaw for residents to watch Iga Świątek’s final match at the Roland Garros tennis tournament.
