The incident took place at a training site in Wicko Morskie, near Ustka (located on the northern coast of Poland, along the Baltic Sea). The 27-year-old had gone into the water during his off-duty period.
The Maritime Search and Rescue Service and the Navy had been searching for him since Monday. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated under the supervision of the Szczecin Niebuszewo District Prosecutor's Office.
Challenging rescue operation
The search and rescue operation involved the rescue vessels "Tajfun" from Darłowo and "Orkan" from Ustka, along with rescuers on a dinghy, firefighters, police officers, and soldiers. The area where the man went missing was also searched by a Navy helicopter.
The 18th Mechanized Division, based in Siedlce (approximately 100 kilometers or about 62 miles east of Warsaw), has announced that the soldier's body has been recovered. He was a member of the reconnaissance battalion.
Condolences to the family of the deceased soldier
"It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that the body of a soldier from the 18th Reconnaissance Battalion, who went missing while swimming in the sea at Wicko Morskie on August 5, 2024, during his off-duty time, was found today. The soldier's family is receiving psychological support," announced the 18th Mechanized Division via social media.
