The police have launched an investigation into the destruction of the fence surrounding the summer house of Jerzy Owsiak, the head of WOŚP (the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity), Poland's most popular charity organization.

Over the last weekend, unknown perpetrators spray-painted vulgar messages on Owsiak's fence, including offensive slogans such as “**** Owsiak” and “Beware sepsis.”

"Graffiti appeared, specific and aggressive," Owsiak informed on Facebook. His wooden house, located on the way to a Catholic church, is on the route for the Stations of the Cross, a traditional Catholic pilgrimage undertaken during Lent.

"What if they set it on fire?" asks Owsiak after fence vandalism

“For us, this is another traumatic experience. We want to leave. It’s scary. What if they set it on fire? Please, call so we can make it out in time. Such wild ideas, and the Stations of the Cross just started. Our house is on the path to the church. The fence is like the first station. You can come up with a name for it,” Owsiak wrote.

According to the WOŚP head, this attack is “another continuation of media-driven slanders and accusations from an aggressive TV station.” A report published just before the 33rd WOŚP finale revealed that the majority of coverage about Owsiak and his foundation in far-right media outlets, such as TV Republika and wPolsce24, was negative, reaching 13 million viewers with content that incited hatred.

Sociologist speaks out against hate speech after Owsiak’s property vandalized

“We are witnessing an escalation of hate speech,” said Professor Ireneusz Krzemiński, a Polish sociologist, in response to the vandalism of Owsiak’s property. In a comment for Polish Radio, Professor Krzemiński expressed his hope that the emotions surrounding WOŚP would calm down after the finale.

Despite Saturday’s incident and previous threats reported to the police, WOŚP continues its activities and on Monday announced the launch of another call for bids to purchase medical equipment.

The funds raised during this year's charity finale will be used to purchase equipment for pulmonology, for local fire departments and water rescue units (post-flood purchases), and for the Scientific and Training Center in Otwock, a town located just outside Warsaw.
