Captain Harry Kane put England 1-0 up in the 19th minute of the game from a penalty at Wembley Stadium, but Jakub Moder equalized for Poland from close range in the 58th after an error by the home team's defence.

Harry Maguire set the final score at 2-1 for the hosts in the 85th minute when he smashed the ball home after a corner.

The Poles, under their new Portuguese manager Paulo Sousa, went into the match missing their star striker and captain Robert Lewandowski, who had been ruled out by a knee injury and returned to his German club Bayern Munich for treatment.

Several other Poland players, including midfielder Mateusz Klich and defender Kamil Piątkowski, were unavailable for duty due to coronavirus infections.

The match was played without spectators amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Poland are ranked 19th worldwide by football's governing body FIFA, while England are No. 3 in the FIFA table.

The Polish team will now take on Albania in its next World Cup qualifying fixture at home on September 2.

Poland opened their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-3 away draw with Hungary in Budapest on March 25.

The Poles then beat Andorra 3-0 in their second qualifier at home on March 28.

Poland’s qualifying Group I also includes San Marino.

The qualification stage for the 2022 World Cup will run from until November 2021, while the tournament will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
