Cycling: Portuguese rider João Almeida wins 2nd stage of Tour de Pologne

Portuguese rider João Almeida has won the second stage of this year's Tour de Pologne, Poland’s largest cycling race, and claimed the race leader’s yellow jersey.

The 23-year-old, who rides for the Deceuninck-Quick Step cycling team, on Tuesday finished ahead of Italy's Diego Ulissi and Slovenia's Matej Mohorič in the annual race's 201 km second leg between the eastern Polish cities of Zamość and Przemyśl.

Polish rider Michał Kwiatkowski, who won the 2018 Tour de Pologne, finished fourth.

The third leg of the 78th Tour de Pologne will on Wednesday see cyclists cover a 226 km route starting in the southeastern city of Sanok and ending in Rzeszów about 100 km from Poland's eastern border with Ukraine.

The remaining stages of the 2021 Tour de Pologne end in Bukowina Tatrzańska, Bielsko-Biała, Katowice and the historic city of Kraków.

More than 150 riders from 22 teams based in various countries are taking part in the seven-stage 1,140-km race, which runs until August 15.
