Tennis: Poland’s Hurkacz makes last 16 in Toronto

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz has made it through to the third round of the men's singles at the Canadian Open tennis tournament in Toronto.

The 26-year-old, ranked world No. 17 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), defeated Serbia's Miomir Kecmanović in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0, in their second-round encounter on Wednesday.

Up next for Hurkacz in Toronto is the winner of a match pitting Spain's world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz against home favourite Ben Shelton.

Hurkacz is playing for his seventh career singles title in Canada.

The Polish player has also advanced to the second round of the men’s doubles at the hard-court tournament in Toronto, partnering with Mate Pavić of Croatia.

The Canadian Open is a combined men's and women's event held annually in Toronto and Montreal. The 2023 Canadian Open runs until Sunday.
