The Polish world No. 1, who is the defending champion in Paris, overpowered Osaka 7-6, 1-6, 7-5 in the second round of the women’s singles on Wednesday, despite trailing 2-5 in the third set.

The 22-year-old Pole battled back from match point to break Osaka and keep alive her chances of a fourth French Open championship.

Świątek, who triumphed at Roland Garros last year and in 2022 and 2020, will next face the winner between Croatia's Jana Fett and the Czech Republic's Marie Bouzková for a place in the last 16.

Meanwhile, Poland's Magda Linette crashed out of the women's singles in Paris after losing 1-6, 1-6 to Russian Liudmila Samsonova in the first round on Monday.

On the men's side, Poland’s world No. 8 Hubert Hurkacz defeated Japan's Shintaro Mochizuki in the first round.

His second-round encounter with American Brandon Nakashima was interrupted by rain on Wednesday.

The 2024 French Open runs until June 9.
