Swimming: 5th-place finish for Poland’s Wasick at Paris Olympics

Poland’s Katarzyna Wasick has finished fifth in the women’s 50 metres freestyle at the Paris Olympics in what was one of the best showings for a Polish swimmer at this year's Summer Games.

Sweden's Sarah Sjöström won the women’s 50m freestyle gold on Sunday, the final day of swimming in Paris, clocking in at 23.71 seconds, while Meg Harris of Australia claimed the silver, with a time of 23.97.

China's Zhang Yufei finished third in 24.20 to secure the bronze.

Gretchen Walsh of the United States was fourth, with a time of 24.30, while Wasick touched in at 24.33, good enough for fifth place.

Before Sunday's final, the 32-year-old was considered one of Poland's best prospects for a medal in Paris.

Wasick finished fifth at the Tokyo 2020 Games, clocking a time of 24.32 in the Olympic final.

Wasick in February took the bronze in the women’s 50 metres freestyle at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha.

She at the time touched the wall at 23.95setting a new national record.
