The tennis player from Wrocław, located in the southwest of Poland, broke his losing streak and claimed his first win of the new season by defeating Britain’s Billy Harris 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the United Cup in Sydney.
This victory came after two defeats in the group stage against Norway and the Czech Republic.
The match was closely contested, with Hurkacz impressing with 18 aces and a key break in the 11th game of the second set, giving Poland the lead in the fight for a semifinal spot.
In the upcoming quarterfinal matchups, Iga Świątek will face Katie Boulter, and the mixed doubles match will follow, regardless of the earlier results.
The winner of the quarterfinal will play Kazakhstan in the semifinals, who eliminated defending champions Germany, while the U.S. team is already in the top four, awaiting the outcome of the Italy vs. Czech Republic match.
So far, Świątek maintains her lead against Boulter.
The United Cup is a team tennis event serving as preparation for the Australian Open, offering a prize pool of $10 million and ATP/WTA ranking points. In previous editions, Poland reached the final and semifinals.
