Poland’s world No. 36 Magda Linette has moved into the second round of the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament at Indian Wells, California, with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Peyton Stearns of the United States.

The Polish player will next face fourth-ranked American Jessica Pegula in the women's singles competition at the tournament in the California desert.

This is the fifth time in her career that she has reached the second round at Indian Wells, but she has never progressed beyond this stage, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

In the run-up to Indian Wells, Linette competed in the Mérida Open in Mexico, where she reached the second round.

Meanwhile, Poland's world No. 2 Iga Świątek and 31st-ranked Magdalena Fręch both had a bye in the first round of this year's Indian Wells.

Świątek will face France's Caroline Garcia in the second round as she looks to defend her title.

The Polish star won the Indian Wells championship in 2022, made the semifinals in 2023, and regained the title last year, posting a 16-1 win-loss record during that time frame, according to the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

Świątek is also the most recent woman to complete the Sunshine Double, winning Indian Wells and the Miami Open back-to-back in 2022, the WTA said.

The 2025 Indian Wells opened in California on Wednesday and runs until March 16.
