“Although it’s not the news fans wanted—especially in Poland—it’s the right decision for me at this moment,” Świątek wrote in a statement on social media.
The 21-year-old said she has always been proud to represent her country, but that now is the time “for more balance” and to concentrate on her own schedule.
Świątek’s recent form has seen her reach at least the quarterfinals in four consecutive events—Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells, and Miami—though she failed to lift any trophies.
Poland is set to face Switzerland and Ukraine in Radom from April 10–12, with the winner advancing to November’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
