Legia Warsaw will become the first Polish club to enter European competition this season when it hosts Kazakhstan’s FC Aktobe in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

The match at Warsaw’s Polish Army Stadion kicks off at 9 p.m. local time.

Legia, last season’s Polish Cup winners, begins their continental run earlier than other Polish clubs.

National champions Lech Poznań will enter the UEFA Champions League qualifiers in the second round, while Raków Częstochowa and Jagiellonia Białystok are set to join the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers at the same stage.

Although Legia avoided a top-tier opponent in the draw, they drew the short straw in terms of travel, state news agency PAP reported.

The Polish capital is nearly 3,000 kilometres from Aktobe, and the time difference between the two cities is three hours. For now, the logistical burden lies with the visiting Kazakh side.

FC Aktobe are already midway through their domestic season, sitting third in the Kazakhstan Premier League with 32 points from 16 matches—five points behind league leaders FC Astana.

Legia, by contrast, have not played a competitive match since May 24, when they drew 2-2 with Stal Mielec in the final round of Poland's Ekstraklasa top tier.

Adding to the uncertainty, Legia are now under new management. Romanian coach Edward Iordănescu has taken the helm but has so far overseen only pre-season friendlies.

The return leg will be played in Kazakhstan on July 17, with kickoff at 6 p.m. Warsaw time.

Legia and Aktobe have met before—during the 2014/2015 Europa League qualifiers—when the Polish side advanced to the group stage after two victories, 1-0 and 2-0.

However, Legia were later eliminated by FC Astana in the 2017 qualifying rounds.

To reach the Europa League group stage, Legia must win four qualifying rounds. If they beat Aktobe, they will face Baník Ostrava of the Czech Republic in the second round.

If they lose, they will drop into the Europa Conference League, where Sparta Prague await in the second qualifying round.

Meanwhile, Lech Poznań will face the winner of the Champions League qualifier between Albania's FK Egnatia Rrogozhinë and Iceland's Breidablik.

Raków Częstochowa and Jagiellonia Białystok already know their opponents in the Europa Conference League second round.

Raków will face Slovakia’s MŠK Žilina, while Jagiellonia will take on Serbia’s FK Novi Pazar.

Second-round matches for the Champions League are scheduled for July 22–23 and July 29–30. Conference League matches involving Raków and Jagiellonia will be played on July 24 and 31.
