The 19-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 15 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated the former Rome and US Open finalist 7-5, 6-1 in the second round of the women's singles in the Italian capital on Wednesday.
"I feel like at the beginning my serve wasn't really working, and Madison was playing really fast," Świątek said after the match, as quoted on the wtatennis.com website.
She added: "It was tricky, but then I got into the rhythm and it was similar to the first round when I was coming back game after game and just trying to be patient and wait for my game. It came finally."
Earlier in the tournament, the Polish teenager eliminated another American player, Alison Riske, who retired during their first-round match due to injury.
Up next for Świątek at the clay-court tournament in Rome is the Czech Republic's world No. 40 Barbora Krejčíková.
The rising Polish tennis star in February won the Adelaide International tournament in Australia, claiming her second singles title.
Świątek in October won the French Open, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title and becoming the first Pole to lift a Grand Slam singles trophy.
