Tennis: Poland’s Świątek makes Italian Open quarterfinals

Poland’s Iga Świątek has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, with a hard-fought three-set win over the Czech Republic's Barbora Krejčíková.

The 19-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 15 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), saved two match points to eventually overcome the Czech world No. 40, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, in their third-round encounter in the Italian capital on Thursday.

Up next for Świątek at the clay-court tournament in Rome is the winner of a match pitting Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.

The rising Polish tennis star in February won the Adelaide International tournament in Australia, claiming her second singles title.

Świątek in October won the French Open, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title and becoming the first Pole to lift a Grand Slam singles trophy.
