Czech cyclist wins Poland’s Solidarity Race

Meanwhile, his countryman Jakub Ťoupalík finished runner-up, ahead of third-placed Casper van Uden of the Netherlands.

The fastest Pole, Alan Banaszek, finished fourth, ahead of countryman Maciej Paterski.

More than 160 cyclists from 26 teams based in various countries took part in the five-stage 740-kilometre-long race, which concluded  in the southeast of Poland on Saturday.

The annual race, which is also known as the Course de Solidarność et des Champions Olympique, started on Wednesday in the central town of Pabianice.

Polish rider Patryk Stanosz won the first leg of the race, which was 75 km long and ended in Łódź, Poland's third-largest city.

Further stages took riders through a number of mid-sized cities in central and southeastern Poland.

These included Kutno, Płock, Koluszki, Sieradz, Tomaszów Mazowiecki, Kielce and Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski.

Poland will later this year be hosting its largest cycling race, the Tour de Pologne, due to take place from August 9 to 15.
