On Sunday, the final day of swimming in Tokyo, Poland’s Katarzyna Wasick finished fifth in the women’s 50 metres freestyle in what was one of the best showings for the Polish team at the Games.

A day earlier countryman Jakub Majerski came in fifth in the men's 100m butterfly, setting a new national record of 50.92.

In the two other finals appearances by Poles, Radosław Kawęcki was sixth in the men's 200m backstroke, and 17-year-old Krzysztof Chmielewski finished eighth in the men's 200m butterfly.

No other Polish swimmers managed to get past the preliminary rounds and qualify for the finals of their respective events in Tokyo.

Retired champion Otylia Jędrzejczak was the last Polish swimmer to win an Olympic medal. She won the gold in the women's 200m butterfly and added silvers in the 100m butterfly and 400m freestyle at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Before the start of the Tokyo 2020 Games, six swimmers were excluded from the Polish team and sent back home amid paperwork chaos and what was described as procedural errors in the submission process.
