Polish footballers eye glory as Champions League kicks off

Several Polish football players are hoping to make their mark in this season’s Champions League, which kicks off on Tuesday.

As the competition returns, prolific Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is looking to add to his tally as a leading Champions League scorer.

With 73 goals, Lewandowski, FIFA's world player of the year for 2020, is now the competition’s third-highest all-time scorer, behind Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Lewandowski’s Bayern Munich side plays Barcelona at Camp Nou in its Champions League opener on Tuesday.

Other Poland internationals hoping for a moment of glory in the Champions League this season include Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, Red Bull Salzburg centre-back Kamil Piątkowski and Dynamo Kyiv defender Tomasz Kędziora.

Thirty-two teams will take part in a total of six rounds of fixtures in the Champions League group stage, which begin on Tuesday and will conclude on December 8.

The Champions League final will be played on May 28 next year in St. Petersburg, Russia.
