20th World Summer Polonia Games kick off in Pułtusk

Over 500 athletes representing the Polish diaspora and minority communities from 27 countries are taking part in the 20th World Summer Polonia Games, which opened on Sunday in Poland.

It the week-long event held in the country’s east-central town of Pułtusk, athletes are set to compete in 17 disciplines, ranging from chess to mountain biking.

The World Summer Polonia Games (Światowe Letnie Igrzyska Polonijne) is a sports event organized every two years by members of Polish communities living outside of Poland.

The Games are divided into winter and summer events. First Polonia Games took place in 1934 in Warsaw.

The games also host a Polonia Forum to exchange information and problems that the Polonia Diaspora faces.

President Andrzej Duda has assumed an honorary patronage of the Games.

The event is being held under the media patronage of public broadcaster Polish Radio's External Service.
