The 20-year-old, coached by countryman Tomasz Wiktorowski, moved into the top spot vacated by Australian Ashleigh Barty, who announced her retirement last month.

The Pole on Saturday cruised past Japan's Naomi Osaka to win the Miami Open tournament in the US state of Florida, claiming her sixth career singles title.

Świątek overpowered Osaka 6-4, 6-0 in their women's singles final at the Miami Open, a major US tournament that is sometimes referred to as "the fifth Grand Slam."

The Polish tennis player last month won the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament at Indian Wells, California.

In February, she claimed the title at the Qatar Open tennis tournament in Doha.

In May last year, Świątek won the women's singles at the Italian Open clay-court tournament in Rome. In February 2021, she triumphed at the Adelaide International tournament in Australia.

Świątek in October 2020 won the French Open, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title and becoming the first Pole to lift a Grand Slam singles trophy.
