Toborek, 19, climbed all the way to the final, before losing the decisive bout to Lithuania’s Gabriele Stonkute on Thursday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Polish boxer made a promising start, winning the first round, but eventually lost to the higher-ranked Stonkute on a unanimous points decision.

Still, the Warsaw-born Toborek became only the fourth Polish female boxer in history to reach a world championship final, officials told reporters.

En route, she defeated Romania’s Alexandra Petcu and Australia’s Jessica Bagley despite entering the tournament at the last minute as a replacement for an injured teammate.

After scooping the silver, Toborek stands to receive USD 50,000 in prize money, the PAP news agency reported.

Earlier this year, the young boxer won the European under-22 title.

Toborek’s medal is Poland’s second at the Istanbul event, after Lidia Fidura grabbed the bronze in the over 81 kg category.
