The 25-year-old on Tuesday defeated American Frances Tiafoe, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, in their first-round men’s singles match at the indoor hard-court tournament in Vienna.
The Polish player, who is ranked world No. 11 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), will now take on Finland's Emil Ruusuvuori in the next round of the men's singles.
Hurkacz is playing for his sixth career singles title in the Austrian capital, while also seeking to secure a berth in the season-ending ATP Finals next month.
Earlier this week, the Polish player advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s doubles at the tournament in Vienna, partnering with Marcelo Melo of Brazil.
Hurkacz and Melo on Monday defeated Croatia's Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić 1-6, 6-3, 10-4 in their round-of-16 men’s doubles match in Vienna.
Up next for the Polish-Brazilian pairing are home favourites Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler.
The 2022 Vienna Open runs until Sunday.
The ATP Finals will be held in Turin, Italy from November 13 to 20.
