With the scores level at 1-1 after Monday’s matches, world No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz earned an all-important second point for Poland, beating Switzerland’s former Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka 7-6, 6-4 at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane on Tuesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
World No. 48 Magda Linette then produced “heroics” to defeat Switzerland’s world No. 35 Jil Teichmann 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, securing a place for the Polish team in the Brisbane City Final, the WTA said.
With victory assured, Poland captains Agnieszka Radwańska and Dawid Celt rested world No. 1 Iga Świątek and Hurkacz, instead fielding Alicja Rosolska and Kacper Żuk for the final mixed-singles match.
Rosolska and Żuk showed much ambition, but the higher-ranked Swiss pair of world No. 12 Belinda Bencic and Marc-Andrea Huesler won comfortably, 7-5, 6-2, the PAP news agency reported.
Overall, Poland beat Switzerland 3-2, winning Group B of the United Cup and progressing to the competition's Brisbane City Final.
