The 26-year-old defeated Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik 6-3, 7-6 in the first round of the men’s singles.
The Polish player, who is ranked world No. 17 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), will now take on Serbia's Miomir Kecmanović in the next round.
Hurkacz is playing for his seventh career singles title in Canada.
Meanwhile, the Polish player has also advanced to the second round of the men’s doubles at the hard-court tournament in Toronto, partnering with Mate Pavić of Croatia.
Hurkacz and Pavić on Tuesday defeated Britain's Lloyd Glasspool and Finland's Harri Heliövaara 6-2, 7-5 in their round-of-16 men’s doubles match.
Up next for the Polish-Croatian pairing are the Netherlands' Wesley Koolhof and Britain's Neal Skupski.
The 2023 Canadian Open runs until Sunday.
